The legend of Nian

Long long ago, there was a horrible animal called Nian. It usually had slept for more than three hundred days, and when it woke up, it would eat mankind.

A fairy told people that Nian would be most scared by something whose color is red and whose sound is big. When Nian was coming, people would glue red papers on the door and fire bamboos. Nian was frightened away when seeing the red color and hearing the big sound of bamboos on fire.

That is the origin of our posting new year’s scrolls and setting off firecrackers on Chinese new year’s day.
Why do people post new year’s scrolls and set off firecrackers on Chinese new year’s day?
